Get an in-person estimate
A professional moving company should make an account of all your things and find out the weight and bulk of your move. The company’s estimator should be comprehensive and look into all your storage spaces like bookcases, garages, drawers, and cupboards. This is because a large fraction of the price the removalists will give you comes out of how much weight and space your things will take up in their trucks. Ensure you familiarise yourself with that estimate and that it is accurate and make sure you get a few to compare pricing and service. Also make sure if you’re putting your items in storage that they are to give you a fixed price based on the amount of furniture to be stored.
Beware of casual walk-throughs
Estimators who will do casual walk-throughs on your property without taking note of anything will be off the mark. An effective estimator asks questions about the things you intend to move so be ready to inform them of which things you’ll be giving away or donating, leaving behind for the next owners or selling.
Make sure your removalist as the insurance necessary to cover you on your move. Some will only cover you for when damages occur in transit and not from the actual loading/unloading of furniture, where most damages will occur. 2 Easy Removals covers every aspect of your move for up to $50,000.
Avoid paying large deposits
A professional moving company will not ask you for a large deposit or cash before moving your belongings but payment only comes once delivery is completed. Paying in advance gives you little to no control over how the move will go or whether you’ll see your things again. Pay using a credit card so as to protect yourself from a likely fraudulent activity.
Take note of a company name switch
There are removal companies that evade a previously bad reputation by conducting business under different names. When looking for moving companies make sure you find one with a local address and information concerning insurance and licensing. Employees must answer the phone with the business’s full name. Look for any other names the company may be doing business and their federal and state license numbers. Look for complaints about the company online and investigate more about the history of the company.
It is always a good idea to go with good recommendations from friends and family and call those removal companies first. If you don’t have a recommendation, then make sure you take a look at the companies reviews from customers online. You can see some of our at our review page.
Watch out for extra fees
If you are moving into or from a two-story house or an apartment on the 10th floor you might be charged more for elevators and stairs by the removalists. Also expect extra fees if your street is too narrow to fit the removals truck ask for a smaller truck replacement. Inquire about any additional charges from the removal company. 2 Easy Removals pride ourselves on our flat rate pricing but some do have access and stair charges, so please be mindful.
